Summary of the Semester (1/2)

I would like to apologize for the length of this blog to begin with. I was hoping to comment on the discussions we had in class as they came up, but unfortunately I did not make the time. :(

Topic: Nuclear Power
I did not agree with having nuclear power as a form of having the potential of making nuclear weapons as well. I do wish that America would move away from nuclear power and invest in more environmentally safe forms of energy. I do worry about the factories that are built in America, but NIMBY is an issue that I myself would not know how to respond to. Also, I mentioned of a small explotion in Arizona (if I recall correctly) that killed the scientists who miscalculated their experiment....
Since I am not Japanese I was not sure how to respond to the questions about Japan and her constitution because I am not sure if it is my place to give an opinion, but honestly, I would hope Japan would feel they know better than any other country the effects of nuclear weapons and would continue to be a passive nation. Mexico also has a passive constitution, but I am not sure about other Latin American countries. I like to see myself as an optimistic person, so I would like to keep hope alive for a safer future.

Topic: Gangs & Yakuza
I never really thought about the interaction between famous/ rich idols and organized criminals. In Texas, there is a huge number of gangs but I guess its a part of our world that we do not really pay too much attention too. It's almost too natural to think that at the corner so-and-so will meet so-and-so to do a deal. Everyone kind of just looks the other way, including myself. I'd rather not get involved.
In Shimada-san's situation, I was not sure if they were too hard on him or not by making him retire. I mean, his reputation is already hurt because of the things people hear through the grapevine aside from what information officials had on him, but I definately do no think he is a Yakuza. Just because you interact with a criminal does not make you one too. I'm not sure if the law will help decrease organized crime. It's not an easy situation to deal with and I am in no position to give ideas of how to stop organized crime.

Topic: Obama's Speech at Prouge
Although I personally do not tend to agree with President Obama's opinions, I supported what he said in this speech 100%. I am not sure if this will make the world more dangerous before it becomes safer; there is always the possibility of war with the tension in the world in an era where every issue is still resolved by war. Even so, I do believe if we move away from nuclear energy & nuclear weapons, the probability of a war breaking out decreases. :)

Nagasaki was an amazing trip. Thank you so much for the opportunity of having such a wonderful experience!!

Topic: Nagasaki Peace Movement
I'm feel like the Peace Movement is an honorable movement to reduce the chance of the use of nuclear weapons, but if there are people in power who do not wish to repeat history, what can be done? As I mentioned in class, I was once again made aware of the devistation of nuclear weapons. I had visited the Nagasaki museum as well as the Hiroshima museum once before, but as they say once it was "out of sight, [soon became] out of mind." War is a terrible way that mankind has develped to fix a disagreement.
I was actually very much amazing by the final random question we discussed: Is there ever a problem or confusion on whether or not you are officially boyfriend and girlfriend? This kind of question is unthought of in Mexico (not so sure about Amercia). If he has not asked her to be his girlfriend and she has not said yes, then you are not officially a couple, but you could be dating exclusively or just dating. I still do not understand where the confusion lies!! jijijiji

Topic: Herbivorous Men..... ??
This was probably my favorite topic we discussed in this semester. I just cannot understand how women can be intrigued by this kind of man! (Again this is my Latin American opinion and do not wish to offend, but I am just in shock.) I mean I probably prefer a man who does not just pick-up girls, but if he isn't "man enough" to make the first move or be open enough to confess his feelings, he's definately not for me. I know if may sound a little strict to other cultures, but in most Latin American countries, if you are on a date, the guys pays... No exceptions. It's just the gentleman thing to do. Even if you are going out with a guy friend, once in a while he will treat the friend who is a girl. I do not have this problem with my current boyfriend. If he tells me he is low on cash, we get creative so we do not have to spend money in order to enjoy each other's company. The wanting a nice bicycle over a car... Ok, maybe it's good for your health, but really? A bicycle is better than a car? In what planet! (Again I apologize for my choice of words.) I am ambitious when it comes to reaching my goals, so I believe that anyone, male or female, should never be content with settling. I think guy-night is just as important as girls-night-out. It's bonding with friends and co-workers. Maybe only drinking together is not a good thing especially since Japanese people genetically cannot hold their liquor very well. How can a guy spend so much time getting ready? I all for being clean and coordinating, but being too "fashionable" is such a turn off. Metrosexuals are definately not my type. "Take the reins" kind of guy? I mean I do not want so one who wants to control me all the time, but again I would like to be lead by my guy. I would like him to have an opinion and be able to make a decision if I am being too indecisive. I'm not touching the "men do not eat sweets" topic; it just does not make sense.... In Mexican culture, family is very important!! So work should never be more important than loved ones and friends!

I will continue the semester on the next blog :)
